Chapter 15

Ruben had arranged for a private plane to take them to Pinedale, Wyoming. Right before they boarded, Cindy called. She gave Gwynn the hotel information. Gwynn heard Borge in the background telling Cindy to hurry.

“I’ve got to go,” Cindy said. “Borge has a list of things for us to do before the performance tonight. I’ll call you tomorrow.”

When the plane was airborne, Gwynn said, “I forgot to ask. Were the other fingerprints on the receiver identified?”

“Yes. McIntyre’s and Lange’s.”

Gwynn laid her hands on her lap and gazed at the floor. She had suspected that, but she couldn’t understand how anyone who had known Julie could have hurt her.

Ruben put his hand on top of hers. “Just because his fingerprints are on the receiver doesn’t mean he was responsible for Miss Morgan’s death. Let me bring you up to speed about Karlee Daniels. The last time I talked to her in Wyoming it was in a store parking lot. Since she seemed apprehensive, I told her I was investigating the death of my wife’s brother. He had worked for CT at their offshore pipeline subsidiary and my wife wasn’t convinced his death was an accident. She became extremely agitated and her body trembled.

“Then a truck pulled into the parking lot. A man got out and hurried to Karlee. He embraced her, apologized for being late, and told her everything was going to be okay. He asked me why I was talking to her. I said I was asking her how she was doing since I knew she had recently lost her husband. He glared at me, and then he carried her to his truck. As he was leaving, he yelled out the window, ‘Don’t talk to her again.’

“When I made today’s appointment, she seemed anxious to talk. She didn’t want her mother to know about the meeting, so we’ll be seeing her in a cabin.”

“Does she live with her mother?”

“No. Her mother’s staying at her house, probably helping out with the kids.” He paused. “Karlee seems a little slow.”

“Did Holly have any problem talking to her?”

“No, but Holly talked to her on the front porch and only for a few minutes. Karlee’s mother came out and questioned Holly. Holly told her she was from CT and checking to make sure Karlee was doing okay. Her mother led Karlee back into the house and told Holly not to come back again.”

Gwynn sat silently, thinking about Karlee and wondering if they should see her. It might be too hard on her and the poor woman just lost a husband. “Maybe we should leave her alone.”

“If she seems at all agitated, we’ll leave,” Ruben assured her. “In case she mentions the name Joann Shelton, that’s the name Holly used.”
